#36: Can strength training improve our metabolic health?

Jonathan Pittam & Luke Callis

In today's episode we discuss the question of whether strength training can improve our metabolic health.  Metabolic health being related to blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, blood triglycerides and cholesterol.

To discuss this, I'm joined by Luke Callis, a sports scientist and strength & conditioning coach with applied experience working in elite sport, mainly the areas of professional football working at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Barnet FC and Sheffield United. More recently his work has hugely diversified working with athletes ranging from GB Para swimmers, GB Ice Hockey Players and Professional football referees to name a small selection.

Luke's research interests are around injury prevention and long term athletic development.

We discuss a wide variety of ideas including:

What is strength training?
Does it matter which type you do for metabolic health?
The different types of strength training
The concept of 'Overload'
Why goalsetting matters
The power of routine
Cardio vs strength training for metabolic health
Why 'beasting' doesn't work
Why focusing on your weight isn't smart

And much, much more...
